Spring Concert:
Gospel and Other Good News with Guest Alumna, Karla Mundy ’01

According to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, “the essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude.”

Bishop’s University Singers Artistic Director Dr. James Crooks fully agrees: “The attraction of Gospel and Gospel-inspired music is its deep joy. For me, no other form of choral music captures it so effectively, nowhere is that more evident than in the Gospel tradition.”

The Bishop’s University Singers’ newest concert, Gospel and Other Good News, will be presented at the Centennial Theatre on Friday, at 8 p.m. on March 29, 2019, and will showcase the performance of BU Singers alumna Karla Mundy (’01) – now a well-established choir director and singer in the Vancouver area, who also offers singing workshops throughout North and Central America.

Composed of over 70 members from the student body, faculty and staff from Bishop’s University as well as from the community, the choir will perform a number of Gospel standards such as How I Got Over, His Eye is on the Sparrow, The Storm is Passing Over, as well as many Gospel-inspired secular pieces including Heaven Help Us All, I’ll Remember You, This is Me, and Light of a Clear Blue Morning. Our dynamic and effervescent live band will add the finishing touch to this Gospel extravaganza under the direction of guitarist and arranger Alex Cattaneo.

The concert will also see the long-time BU Singers Artistic Director Dr. James Crooks return to the helm while current Artistic Director Fannie Gaudette is on a one-term temporary leave, concentrating on songwriting and taking part in the Ma Première Place des Arts competition among her many projects.

Le Directeur artistique des Chanteurs de l’Université Bishop’s, le Pr. James Crooks, est entièrement d’accord : « L’attrait de la musique Gospel et inspirée du Gospel est la grande joie qui s’en dégage. À mes yeux, aucune autre forme de chant choral ne capture mieux cette joie, nulle part ailleurs est-elle aussi évidente que dans la tradition du Gospel. »

Le nouveau concert des Chanteurs de l’Université Bishop’s, Gospel and Other Good News, qui sera présenté le vendredi 29 mars 2019 à 20h au Théâtre Centennial, mettra en vedette la prestation de la diplômée et ancienne membre de la chorale Karla Mundy (’01), qui est maintenant une directrice de chorales reconnue de la région de Vancouver et qui offre également des ateliers de chant à travers l’Amérique du Nord et l’Amérique Centrale.

Composée de plus de 70 membres comprenant des étudiants ainsi que des membres de la faculté et du personnel ainsi que des membres de la communauté, la chorale proposea un répertoire incluant plusieurs classiques Gospel tels que How I Got Over, His Eye is on the Sparrow, The Storm is Passing Over, ainsi que des morceaux inspirés du Gospel tels que Heaven Help Us All, I’ll Remember You, This is Me, et Light of a Clear Blue Morning. Cette performance enlevante sera soutenue par des musiciens dynamiques et passionnés sous la direction du guitariste et arrangeur Alex Cattaneo.

Le concert marquera le retour du Directeur artistique de longue date des Chanteurs, le Pr. Crooks, alors que la Directrice Artistique actuelle Fannie Gaudette s’est absentée pour le semestre, afin de se consacrer à certains de ses nombreux projets musicaux, notamment l’écriture, ainsi que sa participation au concours Ma Première Place des Arts.
